The sperm whale, also called cachalot, is the largest of the toothed whales and the largest toothed predator. It’s the second deepest diving mammal.
They can live 70 years or more. Females give birth every four to twenty years, and care for the calves for more than a decade.
Sperm whales are now offically listed as “vulnerable” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
This is not an uncommons sight these days.
Scientists took the tragic events as an opportunity to study why this was happening.
The whales had lots of plastic in their stomachs. Just a reflection of the way mankind treats the oceans.
Among other things, scientists found a 40 foot long crabbing net and a two foot long car engine cover. This has to stop NOW!
