If you’ve ever stared too long at someone’s head, you may have sometimes seen this little hole right above their ear. Perhaps you have one on your own ear. We found out why those holes exist and the answer just may shock you.
Several people have these holes. If you check on your friends or family members, you’re bound to see at least a few.
Sometimes they’re right on top of the ear, but other times they can be on the side of it, also.
According to statistics, only about 1% of the U.S. population has this hole! Other continents have different ratios.
For instance, in Asia, it’s estimated that 5-9% of the population has it, where in Africa, up to 10% have it.
Scientists say that we have these holes as a remainder from parts of our evolutionary past. As some people we are evolved from fish, some say that these holes could be were our gills once were.
If you have one, there’s no need to panic. It’s rare if someone has an infection in this area. However, if one has a certain type of “preauricular” sinus, then they should be advised not to hang jewelry in that crevice.
