In 2014, University of Quebec conducted a study which focused on nail biting, pulling hair and picking skin…
Biting your nails was found to be linked to the perfectionist personality. “We believe that individuals with these repetitive behaviors may be perfectionistic, meaning that they are unable to relax and to perform tasks at a normal pace,” said Dr. O’Connor.
The doctors asked 48 people to fill out a survey, and the natural nail biters admitted they are percussionists when it comes to being organized.
Dr. O’Connor says they are “prone to frustration, impatience, and dissatisfaction when they do not reach their goals.”
“The findings suggest individuals suffering from body-focused repetitive behaviors could benefit from treatments designed to reduce frustration and boredom and to modify perfectionist beliefs.”
