Ghostly blue beach is in Sweden and lit up by clusters of glowing plankton

  • On the Island of Mjorn in Sweden million of planktons glowed to illuminate a beach.

  • Recreational photographer from Derbyshire captured the fabulous natural spectacle.

  • He said the strange shimmering sight looked like the ‘water was on fire and was definitely mirroring the sky’

  • Scientists believe bioluminescent phenomenon is due to disturbing plankton and causing them to emit light. 

  • These supernatural neon waves lapping smoothly at the shore are created by one of nature’s tinniest creatures which emit light though a complex chemical reaction.

Organisms are capable to glow by releasing the chemical luciferin, which reacts with oxygen to create light.Following organism have capability of glowing:

  • Plankton

  • Fireflies

  • Anglerfish 

Lukasz Warzecha, who lives in High Peak, Derbyshire, photographed the stunning sight while on a trip with to Sweden.Here, Lukasz Warzecha puts his hands into the water to disturb the tiny creatures, causing them to give off light.
